TechniqueHow to improve your catch

November 15, 2018

Two-time Olympian Chloe Sutton talks about the aspect of the freestyle stroke that she considers the most important – the catch.

The five aspects of the freestyle arm pull are Entry, Catch, Power Phase, Finish and Recovery.

Chloe says the catch is the most important part of the stroke because it sets you up to achieve the three main objectives of the fresstyle arm stroke:

1) direct the water back. Not up, down, diagonally or sideways.

2) utilise as much surface area as possible. Not just the hand, but the forearm and upper part of the arm.

3) use your big muscles. Lats, shoulders and chest are the stronger muscles that power you through the water.
